T

he Baromedical Research Foundation was formed in 1988, as a not for profit tax-exempt organization. The Foundation's mission is the scientific advancement of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A basic science laboratory, located within the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Surgery Research Facility, provided a platform for the Foundation's research efforts during its first decade.

Beginning in 1999, the Foundation's interest was refocused on randomized and controlled clinical study. By the year 2000, several clinical trials had been developed and implemented; others followed. The trials are designed to investigate the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of late radiation tissue injury and hyperbaric oxygen as a radiation sensitizer. Initial study results were published in 2008.
