Dr.Tenorio is a board certified radiation oncologist and long-standing clinical faculty member at the National Cancer Institute (INCAN). She is active in several medical societies. Dr.Tenorio holds a master degree in Health Systems Administration from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and now teaches on that course. For more than a decade, Dr.Tenorio has been an associate researcher for the National Institutes of Health sponsored cancer research, and is the INCAN researcher- in- charge of Project HORTIS. |

Dr.Hinojosa is a specialty physician in Radiotherapy. He attended medical school in Morelia, Michoacan, followed by two years of internal medicine in Puebla Puebla and finally, radiotherapy residency at the National Cancer Institute. In June of 2004, Jose became a co-investigator in the HBO research facility of the Institute. Dr.Hinojosa is board certified by the Mexican Council of Certification in Radiotherapy and a member of both ASTRO and CRILA. |

Dr.Cone graduated from medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, and moved up to Columbia for his residency training. He holds board certification in Family Medicine and Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine. Dr.Cone serves as the Chief Information Officer of the USC School of Medicine. Dr.Cone heads the hospital's undersea and hyperbaric medicine fellowship program, is a primary speaker during Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine and a regular faculty member of the Hyperbaric Medicine Advanced symposia. Dr.Cone's research interests extend from telemedicine for the rural community, rural health and breast cancer treatment related lymphedema, to the complications of hyperbaric oxygenation and radiation tissue injury. |

Dr. Cimsit is a Professor and the Director of Department of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, University of Istanbul. She holds a MD degree in Internal Medicine from the same university, and a master’s degree from the Faculty of Science of Aberdeen University. Since 1980 she has become the leading authority in underwater and hyperbaric medicine in Turkey, as a teacher, researcher and clinician. Dr. Cimsit has published extensively in Turkish and English. She serves as a scientific consultant to the Turkish Navy and Ministry of Health in these fields. Dr. Cimsit is the researcher-in-charge of Project HORTIS in Turkey. Dr. Toklu is a specialty physician in the Department of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. He completed both medical school and residency training at this esteemed institution. Dr.Toklu has published extensively in English and Turkish. His areas of particular scientific interest include health related issues in undersea medicine, diving technologies and hyperbaric oxygenation. Dr. Aktas is a specialist on underwater and hyperbaric medicine and serves as a professor at the Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Department of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine. Since early 1990’s, he has been a medical consultant of several underwater diving and caisson projects. His research interests are breath- hold diving, trauma related injuries, electro-thermal burns, radiation tissue injury and hyperbaric oxygen. Dr. Aktas has published extensively in English and Turkish. He is a board member of the Turkish Underwater Federation and President of the Turkish Underwater and Hyperbaric Society. |

Dr. Rodrigues assumed the Project HORTIS Principal Investigator role for the Academic Medical Center in the summer of 2004. She received her initial medical training in both Cape Town and Pretoria, and is nearing completion of her radiation oncology residency. Dr. Rodrigues underwent formal training in undersea and hyperbaric medicine courses in both Pretoria and South Carolina. |

STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY BAROMEDICINE FACILITY The Tygerberg Academic Hospital officially opened in 1976 and is the largest hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest hospital in South Africa. It acts as the major teaching hospital for the Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Health Sciences. It serves a population of 2.5 million people, presently has 1,278 active beds and has a Level 1 Trauma Centre. It also serves as the tertiary state referral centre for all medical specialties i.e. internal medicine & related sub specialties; all surgical disciplines – including vascular, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, otorhynolaryngology, plastic & reconstructive, ophthalmology, etc.; high risk obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics & neonatology; dermatology & all specialties Intensive Care Units. It also has an Oncology Centre & is the only adult burns unit in Cape Town. The department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences presents ECHM accredited programmers in Hyperbaric & Underwater Medicine. Dr. Roberts holds an MBChB degree from the University of Stellenbosch, a diploma in anesthetics and a post-graduate diploma in conscious sedation and pain control. She is formally trained in undersea and hyperbaric medicine in both South Africa and the United States. She assumed her Project HORTIS investigator role in July 2009. |

Local Priniciple Co-Investigator: Prof CF Heyns Chris Heyns obtained his medical degrees (MB ChB) in 1973, and completed a Master of Medicine degree in Urology at the University of Stellenbosch in 1986. His PhD thesis (1990) dealt with testicular descent in the fetus and the etiology of cryptorchidism. His current research interests include urological oncology, urethral stricture disease and urogenital trauma. He is head of the Department of Urology at Tygerberg Hospital since 1995, and President of the College of Urologists of South Africa since 2000. |

Dr. Ken Thistlethwaite is a University of Queensland graduate in Medicine. He also obtained a BSc(hons) from the University of Sydney/NTU and his fellowship in General Practice in 2005. He works in General Practice anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. He started work at the Wesley Unit following completion of his formal hyperbaric training at the Prince of Wales Hospital in February 2004. In June of 2009, Ken moved into the role of Medical Director. |

Formal training in Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine in Sweden, Australia and the United States. Specialist Registrar at the Hyperbaric Unit, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia for six months. Consultant in Anasthesiology and Intensive Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. Currently appointed Head of Anaesthesiology Department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Member of the national reference board for Hyperbaric Medicine in Sweden. |

Dr.Hussey serves Project HORTIS as its principal biostatistical resource. He developed the randomization codes, supervises the research coordinator and will feature as a contributing author on all of the resulting HORTIS generated publications. |

Ms. Taylor's responsibilities extend to the day-to-day oversight of the HORTIS database, coordination of patient follow-up schedules. |

South Carolina School of Medicine.

The
Department of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, Istanbul Faculty of
Medicine, Istanbul University is the only civilian facility in Turkey
that provides training on hyperbaric medicine. The department gives services
as an outpatient clinic and inpatient clinic with 22 beds and a laboratory.

The
Pretoria Academic Hospital, in Pretoria, South Africa is a 1,000 bed
academic institution and one of the biggest hospitals in South Africa.
The first patients were admitted on March 1, 1932. Over 30,000 patients
are seen in the 94 outpatient department clinics and approximately 5,000
patients are treated at the emergency department every month. The hyperbaric
oxygen service opened its doors in July 2004.

Royal Hobart Hospital is the major teaching hospital for the University
of Tasmania and is the state referral centre for cardiothoracic surgery,
neurosurgery, burns, hyperbaric and diving medicine, neonatal intensive
care and high risk obstetrics. The hospital has 480 beds and services
a population of approximately 240,000 people.

in 1801 as South Carolina College, the University of South Carolina (USC)
remains on its original site in Columbia, the state capital. The campus
has grown from its origins of one building on the historic Horseshoe
