HORTIS VII – Laryngeal Radionecrosis
While laryngeal complications from radiotherapy are uncommon, they can prove particularly problematic. Because the likelihood of persistent tumor is always high, the traditional approach has been to quickly proceed to frequently undergo laryngectomy. "Quality of Life" issues are obviously very much in the forefront with this approach. Because few medical options exist, hyperbaric oxygen has been considered and is based upon its success at other anatomic sites.
Polled data from retrospective case reports suggests benefit, with salvage of the voice box and improved voice quality noted as common findings and encouraging results. This data does suggest important tissue and function-saving outcomes, but it lacks a sufficiently high level of evidence for its wider application.
HORTIS VII will specifically address this important anatomic site.
